If you are driving the gasoline or diesel-powered car of your dreams, you probably never have plans to get rid of it. When this is the case, your vehicle will eventually need a new engine because its current engine will run out of life. Yes, preventative maintenance extends the life of an engine, but it won’t make it last forever. Tri Valley Auto Repair & Diesel explains more below.
Constant Overheating
You replace the cooling system, but your engine still overheats. In fact, it overheats every time you drive it. Constant overheating can be a sign of serious engine damage such as a cracked engine block. You cannot repair a cracked engine block. You must replace the engine if the engine block is cracked.
Excessive Exhaust
A cracked engine gasket can cause oil to flow into the combustion chamber and, as a result, you’ll see blue exhaust flowing out of your tailpipe. A cracked head gasket can cause coolant to spray all over the engine. Consequently, you’ll end up with white exhaust and steam coming out from underneath the hood. If you see black exhaust flowing out of your tailpipe, you have a serious breach in the fuel system in your engine is burning away the diesel fuel or gasoline. This damage is serious.
Metal in the Oil
In some cases, you may be able to rebuild the engine to put a stop to the excess exhaust flowing out of your tailpipe. You cannot rebuild the engine, however, if you have metal shavings in the motor oil. You probably can guess what the shavings are; they are disintegrating engine parts. Consequently, you’ll need to replace your engine which will die within a few hours anyway.
Never-ending Knocking
Constant knocking can be as bad as constant overheating. If your engine is knocking all the time, you may have something going on in the cylinder block that is damaging it and, as a result, setting you up for the need for a new engine. Usually, the loud knocking that you hear are the pistons banging inside of the cylinders. This is because the rod bearings have worn out.
Zero Power
Finally, we hate to say it but, eventually, your engine will simply be unable to produce power anymore. It has lived its life and it’s ready to go to the engine graveyard. When this happens, you’ll need to replace your engine to continue to drive your dream automobile.
