What Happens When the Spark Plugs Wear Out?

You will start to have engine performance problems when the spark plugs wear out. We are going to discuss in detail below the specific problems you will have. If you stick to your automobile’s factory-scheduled services, you may never have problems with the spark plugs because they will be replaced before they wear out completely. The plug wires will be replaced, if necessary, as well.

Rough Starts

Part of the engine performance problem you will have is a hard time getting your engine started. In order for an automobile engine to fire up, you need the right amount of air and fuel in the combustion chamber and the spark plugs to fire it. In other words, the plugs generate sparks that set the air and fuel on fire. If the plugs are worn out and not producing enough sparks to ignite the air and fuel, you may not be able to get your utility vehicle, car, or truck’s engine started.

Misfires

The engine will also misfire if you do get it started. This is a sign, again, that the spark plugs are having problems producing sparks. You not only need the sparks to fire at the engine but also to keep it running. As such, you may hear the engine hiccup while you are driving. When the engine cuts out briefly, this means a cylinder did not fire. This can be due to worn spark plugs.

Sputtering

This is also going to make your engine sputter and idle roughly. In fact, if the engine is really struggling to produce combustion, it will stall. You will continue to have problems getting your vehicle to pick up speed when you accelerate and maintain speed when you are driving fast if the spark plugs cannot continuously ignite the air and fuel in the cylinders.

Poor Economy

Unfortunately, this can cause a reduction in your automobile’s fuel economy. Consequently, you may find yourself driving to the service station more often to fill the tank. When this happens, you end up spending more money on fuel than you would if you had the spark plugs replaced. You want to replace the plugs before they damage the wires.

Give us a call today if you are having any of the problems discussed above. As we mentioned, these are signs that your spark plugs are worn out and need to be replaced. We would be happy to install new plugs in the engine to restore your vehicle’s performance.
