What Indicators Show It’s Time to Change the Transmission Fluid

Most people know that it’s essential to change the oil in their car regularly. Still, many don’t realize that transmission fluid also needs to be replaced regularly. The transmission system is one of the most important parts of a car, and if it isn’t properly maintained, it can lead to all sorts of problems.

Telltale signs that it’s time to change the transmission fluid

Transmission fluid is an important component of any car with an automatic transmission. The fluid helps to lubricate the transmission and prevents overheating. Over time, however, the fluid can become contaminated with dirt and debris. There are a few common indicators that show it’s time to change the transmission fluid, including:

  • Gears slipping: If you notice that your gears are slipping or shifting erratically, this could be a sign that the transmission fluid needs to be changed.
  • Leaking transmission fluid: If you notice a pool of red liquid beneath your car, your transmission fluid is likely leaking.
  • Transmission fluid that is dark in color or has a burned smell: Over time, transmission fluid can become dark and murky or develop a burned smell, indicating a problem with the transmission system.

If you notice any of these indicators, take your car to a trusted mechanic to have the transmission system checked and flushed.

How often should you change the transmission fluid in a car?

Most carmakers recommend changing transmission fluid at 100,000 miles. Some automakers have even pushed that number to 150,000 or 200,000 miles. Still, a few carmakers recommend changing transmission fluid much sooner — even as often as every 30,000 miles or so. So, what’s the best advice? Transmission fluid should be inspected regularly and changed if it’s degraded.

In most cases, that means every 50,000 miles or so. However, if you do a lot of stop-and-go driving or tow a trailer, you may need to change your transmission fluid more often. As always, consult your owner’s manual for specific recommendations.

The transmission fluid is an essential part of any car with an automatic transmission. Over time, it can become contaminated and need to be changed. A few common indicators show when it’s time for a change, including gears slipping, leaking transmission fluid, or transmission fluid that is dark in color or has a burnt smell. By changing the transmission fluid regularly, you can help to extend the life of your car’s transmission.
